Riverbend Neighborhood Association: Our House

22504 Alexandrine
By Barb Angus

The fourth house off Military on the north side of Alexandrine has been home to Jim Greene since he was two years
old. Jim’s Dad purchased the house in 1924 when he was the first City Attorney in Dearborn when Clyde Ford was
Mayor. The house was built in 1924 and was originally a white wooden frame house. Jim’s Dad had the house bricked in
1929 after the sulphur well next to the Rouge River had a small explosion and turned all the white houses in the
neighborhood yellow! That well  is located behind the houses on the south side of the street and is now capped.
Jim has memories of playing baseball in the open lot just east of his house . Home plate was at the street and if you hit
the ball over the alley, it was an automatic home run. The Rouge River was a much cleaner river then and the kid’s spent a
lot of time playing along the river. The old swimming hole was behind St. Joseph’s Retreat (Michigan & Outer Drive).
One of Jim’s buddies, Bob Mason, lived across the street where Mark Matea lives now. Bob’s Dad, Lowell Mason,
owned Mason’s Drug Store which was on Michigan, one store front down from where Bailey’s is now.
Thank you Jim and Bernardine for sharing your story with us!
